Gabriel De La Mora: Frágil/ Fragile

Gabriel De La Mora: Frágil/ Fragile

17Feb11

Gabriel De la Mora?s  Frágil/Fragile exhibition opens this Sunday,  February 20 and runs until July 3, 2011. It will show his most recent works and will focus on an installation of tables with objects as well as some wall-hung works.

De la Mora works in various media and formats that range from drawings made from human hair to objects and drawings made with alphabet soup to burned papers that challenge what distinguishes a drawing from a sculpture.

The work table, which will be the main element of this exhibition, will contain approximately 100 small objects visually reminiscent of Duchamp?s readymades, placed in dialogue with each other and arranged as they would be in De la Mora?s studio.

Photoshop Quick Tip: Create a Dragan Style Portrait Effect in 5 Steps

If you’re a photo buff of any level, you’ve most likely heard of or seen the amazing work of Andrzej Dragan. His portraits have a very high contrast and color style all their own. The effect is stunning and eye catching. It reveals a lot about the subject that the naked eye doesn’t get to see. A similar effect can be created in Photoshop with just a few simple steps. Lets take a look.
Here’s a look at what we’ll be doing with this portrait. If you want to use the same image, you can download it here.

Step 1
First up, lets add a Levels adjustment layer, and adjust the levels to …

Works in Progress….

Winter has never been my favorite season. I don’t mind the cold as much as I mind losing daylight so EARLY. I came home tonight, paced around the house nervously, ate everything that couldn’t out run me, and then decided I needed to do something “productive” with my time. Which tonight, will be blogging.

I’ve been playing with works on small little canvases. They all are at risk of being painted over at any second, but I’m trying to let ideas evolve and just have some fun without “wasting” too much time or paint. Above is my caged girl in progress… not sure where this one is going but I’m imagining some little imps, swinging in the branches.Above is an old raven I did after downloading some works of Poe. I know there’s nothing particularly artsy or abstract about it, but sometimes you just feel like you should collage a crow. So there.

And along the same lines, below is a tiny little work I call “Saturday Morning,” which looks more like a “Saturday Morning Bloodbath” but that’s merely coincidental. And the keys? Actually, I had ordered a necklace on Etsy and had just put it on there to remind myself to put it up and I thought it looked neat. I’m pretty certain this painting isn’t long for this world, but I do like the general idea more than the unfortunate outcome. I sure would like some scrambled eggs now, though.

And last but not least is a painting that I really have grown to love, and for me to LOVE (and admit that I love) one of my paintings? is pretty rare. I added more flowers, altered the colors of existing flowers, and put a few finishing touches on to ensure this one is FINISHED. Sometimes you just want to look at something that’s pleasing and not feel like you have to “think” about it.

Okay! I’m off to have “reading time” with the family (which drove my 14 year old into bed at 9:15 to avoid it all together.) I started the Hunger Games series and, despite the teen love/angst, am just devouring the second book.

Good Clean Fun: Interactive Games Tidy Urban Spaces

It doesn’t matter where you go in the world: it seems like litter is always an unwelcome part of the scenery. The Swiss city of Lucerne decided to do something about their litter problem by enticing residents and visitors to have fun while throwing their rubbish away. The initiative is called “Lucerne Shines,” and in [...]

Illustrator Quick Tip: How to Create Pop Art Using Live Trace

If you’re a fan of of Andy Warhol, then you’re familiar with the screen printed look of pop art. Screen prints typically have a limited number of colors. Those colors are specifically chosen to represent shadows, highlights and midtones. Pop art is typically very bright and colorful which makes it very appealing and fun to create.
Using Live Trace in Adobe Illustrator we can create some very interesting pop art in a matter of a few clicks. First up lets grab a good photo to use. I chose an image of Marilyn Monroe, to create something with a little Warhol flare. There are lots of great Marilyn image here.

In Illustrator lets …

Empress Foliage, While Getting Ready for Donna Granata

The quest for foliage continues, and I?ve been adding dark shadows into the foliage on the right side of the painting, building substance and getting further away from the very decorative leaves that were there before. In the photo you can see where the new edge of the painting is (regular visitors will remember I snapped a bright orange chalk line so that I could see what the new boundary was) because the thinly painted and linear work on the right contrast sharply with the dark leaves I?ve added in the last week.

We?ve also been busy getting the studio ready (read ?cleaned up?) for Donna Granata to come over tomorrow to shoot photos for her impressive portfolio of portraits of artists. She runs an organization called Focus on the Masters which documents the lives and work of artists who live in Ventura County. Once the portrait is made it will be part of her traveling exhibit of photographs and also accompany an television interview that will make part of a file about my work that will be available to historians and researchers in the future. I?ll post a link when they?ve put my file on the web.
